Fernando Alonso concedes he will not be challenging for his first points of the season in the Monaco Grand Prix after suspected electrical issues left him floundering during Q2.

The Spaniard had set his sights on a first top ten qualifying result of the season in the McLaren-Honda, even going as far as suggesting 'sixth, seventh and eighth' were possible for both himself and team-mate Jenson Button.

However, Alonso never got the chance to challenge when his MP4-30 cried enough at the start of his quick lap, the two-time champion left bottom of the Q2 reckoning in 15th.

"The problem I think is something electrical because the car completely switched off in the middle of the straight," he said. "I had no power, no electricity, no light on the steering wheel, so something electrical..."

Indeed, it is a particularly frustrating result for Alonso given he had targeted the third or fourth row, conceding that his hope for the top ten and points is all but over now.

"We were P3 and P6 this morning in FP3 when we had no traffic," he continued. "Perhaps that is a bit optimistic, but sixth, seventh, eighth position we could fit both cars. Unfortunately we could not manage to deliver he result today. Next time we need to improve performance and reliability because we are a bit too fragile at the moment.

"I don't want to sound too pessimistic but this is the Monaco Grand Prix, so the race is Saturday. There is a train of cars on Sunday and we're starting 15th, but hopefully we can get some experience, we can do some laps and to improve the performance and the reliability because we are too fragile at the moment."

Despite this, Alonso has higher hopes for team-mate Button, who qualified 12th - and will start 10th by virtue of a penalty for Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean -, suggesting he is well placed for points.

"Definitely the performance is better this weekend and sometimes we were in the top ten, so starting 10th, with a good strategy maybe a point or two is possible tomorrow."

Pending potential penalties for Alonso as they identify the car's problem, he will move up to 13th place at the expense of the penalised Sainz and Grosjean.
