Daniil Kvyat is hoping that his F1 season can take a step forward after a strong qualifying run at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Russian put in a late lap to move up to fifth overall in the final phase of qualifying and will start just one spot position behind team-mate Daniel Ricciardo as Red Bull used Monaco's tortuous streets to its advantage.

Ricciardo revealed that the team was able to bolt the maximum amount of downforce into its RB11s as outright speed was not a requirement of the car's Renault engine and Kvyat confirmed that progress had also be made with the V6, giving both drivers a more competitive package.

"It's still not ideal," the Russian admitted, "There have been a few good steps from Renault but we are still not where we want to be, as we can see that the pole man is still quite a way in front. Our final destination is more than we achieved today but, for tomorrow, this is still a very good platform to start from."

Kvyat also admitted hat, with a more settled car under him, his confidence levels had reached a new high, aiding his performance.

"We had a good free practice session on Thursday and got a few quality laps today as well, so we managed to build up to qualifying," he reported, "It was one of the few times this year that I felt really confident in the car, which was very important. We are in a situation now where we need to grow up and take a few steps forward and, today, the right steps have been done, so it was good.

"I hope I can carry [this confidence] through the whole season now. It was an important day for me to be honest and, usually, if you are confident in qualifying, it's the same in the race. We still have some work in front of us, but there have been a few positive things in terms of the car today, so we can move from there."
