Sebastian Vettel is refusing to be drawn on his expectations from Ferrari's much discussed engine upgrade, but is hopeful it will bring performance gains.

This week Ferrari was confirmed to have used three tokens towards developing its power unit ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, raising expectations that the team could make a step forward in challenging the might of Mercedes.

However, Vettel would not give much away about the developments, saying he will wait until he tries it on track before drawing any conclusions.

"Hopefully [we will get more] performance, it is as simple as that," he said. I can't tell you much, firstly because I can't and secondly because I haven't been on track."

Having finished second in the Monaco Grand Prix to keep himself very much in the hunt for a title challenge, Vettel says the target for Canada remains very much focused on Mercedes.

"We are here to fight. It is clear that we always want to get the maximum but you have to see that Mercedes is still the strongest team and the challenge to catch them is huge. We are trying to make everything possible and trying to close the gap. Hopefully we can be a little bit closer this weekend."
