After the excitement and drama of his Monaco Grand Prix, Max Verstappen opted for a safety first mentality in Canada.

With Toro Rosso finding its car not suited to the layout at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with its power-sapping long straights and heavy breaking hairpins and chicanes, neither Verstappen - who started at the back after picking up penalties before the race - or team-mate Carlos Sainz were a threat for the top ten, and the Dutchman admitted that he opted to throttle back and save his equipment instead of risking it.

"I had a good start and first few laps, where I was able to catch the guys in front of me even though I was on the harder tyre, so we can be happy with my first stint," Verstappen reported, "But, after my pit-stop, where of course I lost time due to the ten-second penalty, it became a bit of a lonely race.

"I caught up with [Marcus] Ericsson, but I couldn't get past him on the straights, so I decided to stay behind him, not destroy my tyres and save the engine."

Team principal Franz Tost was still full of praise for his rookie driver, for whom he sees better things next time out.

"We knew that here in Canada we were going to struggle with our performance because we simply miss speed on the straights but, nevertheless, I must say that both drivers did a good job," Tost confirmed. "Max did a very good race because, despite of all his penalties, he was still able to catch up and do some very competitive lap times.

"Now Montreal is over, we are looking forward to Austria, where we expect to show a much better performance thanks to the circuit layout, which should suit our car more."
