Sebastian Vettel says he is happy with third on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix, although he would love to have been a bit closer to Mercedes.

Vettel looked strong in practice - topping the times on Friday and again this morning in his Ferrari. However in Q3 he was unable to take the fight to Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and while he did improve on his final lap, posting a 1 minute 08.810 second effort, he remained in P3 overall, 0.355s off pole.

"Once again I thought that we could probably have a bit of a word but unfortunately they were a bit too quick. We tried everything," Vettel noted. "I think it looked good generally throughout practice and preparing qualifying. Obviously Q1 was a bit tricky for all us but I think we settled into the groove nicely.

"The last part of qualifying... yeah, I guess generally the Mercedes-powered cars seem to be able to turn up the performance quite a bit and if you look at those two guys - and also the Williams, they were a lot closer than they were in practice. So there is some work for us to do.

"Overall, happy with third but as I said I would have loved to be a bit closer. I was happy with the car, I think we did a very good job, thanks to the team, I think we should have a good car in the race."

Pressed on if this might be his best chance to win since Malaysia, he added: "Well we're always ready, we always fight [to win] and obviously wait for our chances. So far it's been quite difficult because they've been bloody quick but yeah, we'll try tomorrow.

"Hopefully we can be a bit closer. We know that qualifying doesn't match the race, so, yeah, we're ready to attack and try our best."
