On a weekend that saw Formula 1 umm and err over its future direction, a demonstration run from some of the sport's most decorated legends sent many on a trip down memory lane.

Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Pierluigi Martini, Ricardo Patrese, Christian Danner and Jean Alesi all ventured out in various classic F1 machinery ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, causing many to get misty-eyed as they grumbled round.

Indeed, you only had to watch the mechanics - and some drivers - rushing to the pit wall to see what effect F1 nostalgia can have at a time of relative disillusionment.
