Reigning DTM champion Marco Wittmann has called his maiden test in Formula 1 'an amazing experience' after notching up a marathon amount of laps for Toro Rosso.

The German 'tin tops' driver leaves the Red Bull Ring having recorded the highest total of laps by any driver in the two-day in-season F1 test with 158 in total. His fastest lap, a 1m 10.103s, saw him end the day fourth on the timesheet and a full second of quickest driver Nico Rosberg.

After all the teams lost valuable running time on the first day due to heavy rain the Toro Rosso squad made the most of largely bright and dry conditions working on aerodynamics, tyres and race setup.

Wittmann says he is delighted by his day's work and says the feel of the STR10-01 compared to his BMW DTM machine was remarkably different.

"This has been an amazing experience for me," Wittmann said. "I was surprised at the power of the car. If I compare it to DTM, it's got quite a lot more power. I enjoyed the whole day, which was trouble free, so I was able to do a lot of laps. I'm happy with my day, I hope the team is too."

Toro Rosso's chief race engineer Phil Charles gave the DTM champion a raving report and was satisfied with the work completed after missing out on Tuesday.

"We've had a very productive day, completing a high number of laps, with Marco making no mistakes and impressing us all with his approach and feedback," Charles said. "There was a short time of adjustment as he got used to the difference in braking from the DTM car to a Formula 1 machine. He then settled into a rhythm, as we started off our programme with a series of long runs."

Wittmann will now return to the day job of defending his DTM crown and will travel to the Norisring for round three of the 2015 championship.
