Having already given the Mercedes team a 1-2 result in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg completed a productive week in Spielberg by posting the fastest time of the two-day F1 group test in the midst of putting another 117 laps on the W06.

Returning to the cockpit 24 hours later than scheduled, Rosberg was greeted by better conditions than faced stand-in Pascal Wehrlein on Tuesday, with a largely dry track on which to evaluate Mercedes' latest developments.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for the German, however, as, following a relatively slow start as he worked through an aero programme, he was sidelined for the final hour before lunch by a gearbox problem that saw his crew working throughout the break in order to maximise track time after the interval.

At that point, Rosberg had 34 laps under his belt, but put in the miles after lunch, adding a further 83 laps before the chequered flag and working through both aero and set-up evaluations, in addition to a tyre test that saw him running on unmarked Pirelli rubber for large parts of the afternoon.

"Monday and Tuesday were two long days spent waiting for better weather, so today was important as there are only four test days during the season now," the German recounted, "Luckily, the track was consistent and we could try a lot of different things today and, although we had a gearbox issue just before lunch, luckily it didn't really cost us any time as we could work on it during the break.

"The guys did a great job to get me back out there so quickly, so thank you to them for that as it was an intense programme and we got through everything and learned a lot."

While Mercedes was looking at things that it hopes will stand both Rosberg and team-mate Lewis Hamilton in good stead through the rest of the season, the German also worked specifically on ideas for next weekend's British Grand Prix.

"We started with was some aero work, then spent time looking at tyres and a few mechanical things like spring settings, but we also ran a stiff set-up in preparation for Silverstone, which will be useful for next week," he confirmed, "The car felt good with that, so I'm sure we will be strong at the next race. It's a very fast track and you have to drive it very hard, but that sort of content - high-speed corners needing good downforce - is a specialty of this car, so I'm feeling confident."
