Sebastian Vettel believes Ferrari is in for a challenge to get the better of Williams in the British Grand Prix after both Ferraris were out-qualified by the team for the first time this season.

With Williams coming on strong when it mattered in qualifying, neither Vettel nor Kimi Raikkonen had an answer to Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas as they locked out the second row for the first time this season.

Also the first time this year that Vettel has been out-qualified by team-mate Raikkonen in a straight fight this year, the German was disappointed to see Ferrari on the back foot this weekend.

"We were simply not quick enough," he said. "Obviously if you look at the first two cars, they were in a different world at this track, then Williams was quick in qualifying. I think it was a bit of a surprise if you look at their times from yesterday, but its nothing new if you take the global picture from last year [when they were] pretty normal on Friday then very strong up on Saturday and Sunday.

"It seems to the case again this year and they were probably just a bit too quick for us. I think, on our side, it was not a completely smooth session and I think we could have operated a bit better, plus in terms of feeling the car, it was not as good as it probably was in some of the practice sessions so I was struggling a bit.

"For my final attempt, I tried to make it happen but did a mistake and it doesn't help to improve grid position if you don't close out the lap."

Furthermore, Vettel admits the evidence of recent races, where both he and Raikkonen have struggled to pass both Williams drivers, will see them difficult to beat come Sunday.

"It's difficult because they are very quick down the straights. We had races where we were quicker but were desperate to pass. I think Bahrain in my case, and Austria and Spain for Kimi, so not the best fast cars to have in front.

"Hopefully tomorrow we can turn it around, have a great start, a good opening lap and then we'll go from there. In terms of strategy, it is probably difficult to do something so if the chance is there we've got to go for it."
