Kimi Raikkonen believes missing out on a low fuel run in final practice definitely hurt him in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, although fifth on the grid “wasn't too bad”.
Raikkonen had been the lead Ferrari until he was sidelined by a water leak with around 20-25 minutes of FP3 to go. The Finn was then unable to match team-mate Sebastian Vettel in qualifying, finishing up 0.281 seconds slower in the all-important top-ten shootout.
“It's not ideal today, because we missed the morning soft tyre run with the issue, and I didn't really know how the grip was,” Raikkonen lamented.
“It wasn't too bad, there were a few issues here and there with small things and obviously it cost a bit of time, but at least we are not on the inside [dirty line] and hopefully we will make a good start and take it from there in the race.”
Pressed on how much the water leak had affected his preparation for qualifying, Raikkonen added: “It doesn't really help, like I said, because we didn't have the run on the soft tyres this morning, but things happen sometimes. It was a bit unknown for qualifying, but we keep improving. It still wasn't ideal in the end, but it wasn't too bad. Obviously you always want to be higher up.”
Looking to the race, Raikkonen said the aim is to beat the Red Bulls and Williams' and be 'best of the rest' behind Mercedes.
“We will try to do our best, obviously Mercedes will be strong, but we will try to be second best after that if we cannot challenge them,” he continued.
“It will be a long race and we have to see how it pans out, but we will keep pushing and see where we are.”
Asked if he is confident he can pull away from the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo in P4, if he can get ahead, Raikkonen replied: “I haven't seen exactly how the others were and we had some issues yesterday. We didn't get exactly what we wanted in terms of run length and there were red flags and stuff. I think it wasn't too bad, and like I said, hopefully we will make a good start and go from there and see what we get.
“It should be pretty okay.”
