Body of F1 legend Fangio exhumed

Juan Manuel Fangio's body exhumed in Argentina on the orders of a judge
The body of five-time Formula 1 World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio was exhumed on Friday in a bid to resolve two paternity cases.

It came after a judge in Argentina ordered the exhumation in order to take samples of DNA from Fangio's body. Fangio died aged 84 on July 17, 1995 and was buried in his home town of Balcarce. He never married and had no known children.

However, two men in their seventies, Oscar Espinosa, known in racing circles as 'Cancho' Fangio, and Ruben Vazquez have both made separate paternity claims. Espinosa, is the son of Andrea Berreut, who had a long relationship with Fangio.

Meanwhile, Vazquez told reporters that his case is not driven by money: “There are no economic interests in my request. I just want to be recognised for the Fangio surname,” he said.

Fangio raced in Formula 1 in the 1950s, winning 24 races from 51 starts and claiming the title in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1957.
