Nico Hulkenberg says he has 'a few good options' for the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship season having seen his hopes of landing a drive at Ferrari scuppered by its re-signing of Kimi Raikkonen.
The 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours winner was considered in the frame at Ferrari as a possible replacement for Raikkonen, but the announcement it will retain its driver line-up for next season has shifted the focus back to other teams.
Though Hulkenberg says he is unsurprised by Ferrari's decision, he remains confident he will be driving a competitive car next season.
“I knew, I could see it coming so if there's no expectations there can't be disappointment,” he said. “Obviously that seat is taken, but the rest I think there are still a few good options for me out there. I'm pretty confident that I can put something good together and that I will be here next year in a good car.”
Beyond Ferrari, Hulkenberg has also been strongly linked to the incoming Haas F1 team, which has made it clear he is on their list of potential targets, while Force India is keen to retain him too. Though Hulkenberg doesn't specifically mention Haas as one of this options, he hints that he is 'preparing everything' in the background at the moment.
“This is the time of year obviously when you talk to everyone and you assess your options. You put things how you like them and then you make a decision when the time is right. But at the moment I'm working quietly in the background and preparing everything”
