Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton insists he is not viewing the Italian Grand Prix as an opportunity to take a potentially significant stride towards a third Formula 1 world title despite main rival Nico Rosberg being compromised in fourth.
Utilising his upgraded Mercedes engine, Hamilton strolled to an 11th pole position of the 2015 season, ending up two tenths clear of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, while Rosberg could only manage fourth after being compromised by taking on the 'old' specification engine.
With Rosberg predicting a tough race day for himself and Ferrari between them, Hamilton has a prime opportunity to stretch his 28 point advantage over the German.
However, Hamilton is taking little satisfaction from that prospect, insisting he would rather see Rosberg pull through for second position ahead of the Ferrari and further Mercedes' already huge margin in the constructors' reckoning.
“Going in to every race you want to get as many points as you can and you're always hoping there is an opportunity to gain more than the usual, but honestly I'm hoping that Nico pulls through and we both can do a good job. Naturally we both want to finish ahead of the Ferraris here, it's good to do on their home turf if possible and obviously for the championship.”
His seventh pole position in a row, another Saturday 'win' next time out in Singapore will see Hamilton go level with Ayrton Senna for the record of consecutive top spots, while he is also just four shy of Sebastian Vettel's single season record of 15. However, Hamilton insists the race remains his main fous.
“It's always a great feeling getting pole. I think I've had a couple of poles here but it's not always been good to me, last year I think was not such an easy getaway but it didn't really matter for the race. It's a long run down to Turn 1, these guys are good off the line so we'll try to do our best tomorrow.
“Our race pace has tended to be quite strong so I hope that we repeat that tomorrow. I don't want to take away Sebastian's dreams but I have dreams also!”
