Federico Gastaldi says Lotus will reveal the identity of its second driver for the 2016 Formula 1 season 'sooner rather than later', adding that it is speaking to drivers with 'good provenance'.

Though Lotus' future itself remains up in the air as discussions with Renault about its potential sale continue behind the scenes, the Enstone-based outfit is forging on with its 2016 plans regardless.

Having confirmed Pastor Maldonado will stay with the team last month, several drivers have been linked to the available second seat to replace the Haas-bound Romain Grosjean.

Those are thought to include current reserve driver and former GP2 champion Jolyon Palmer, newly-available ex-McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen and former Toro Rosso man Jean-Eric Vergne. Though Gastaldi is refusing to be drawn on any driver specifically, he suggests an announcement is due fairly imminently.

"We are closer to making an announcement," Gastaldi said. "I would say something will come sooner rather than later. We won't be disclosing who it is before we announce it, but we certainly have been speaking to drivers with good provenance and we have a pretty good idea who we will have in the car."
