F1 United States Grand Prix: Hamilton: I wish I had done FP1 now

Lewis Hamilton admits he had heeded the weather warning for FP2 by completing more mileage in the far drier FP1 session.
Lewis Hamilton admits he wishes he completed more laps in first free practice for the United States Grand Prix after poor weather forced the cancellation of the second practice session.

Managing just four laps in the Mercedes during a damp FP1 session, Hamilton and his fellow F1 drivers could only watch from the sidelines as torrential rain and storms swept across the Circuit of the Americas, forcing FP2 to be cancelled.

With poor weather forecast for Saturday and possibly also Sunday too, though Hamilton – who can wrap up the 2015 world title this weekend - says the priority at the time was to save tyres, he wishes he had completed more of the session.

“My engineers wanted me to save the tyres for FP2, I wish now that I did the session because I didn't know it would rain so much, but it's okay and we did get some running. I just hope that we still get a race, that's the most important thing.

“I would actually have liked to, just to see what it would have been like in those conditions, but of course the safety of the marshals and everyone else has to come first. I was surprised by how much grip there was on the intermediates in the few laps I did get.”

With concerns that Saturday track action could be washed out entirely, Hamilton admits a 'day off' wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for him…

“I hope I get the day off and get to go to the movies with Roscoe [his dog]. He loves going to the movies, he watches for about five minutes and then passes out and snores so loud that everyone looks at me. He sits in the chair next to me and we put the 3D glasses on him.”
