F1 United States Grand Prix: Stewards to discuss options as storms bear down

Options are being considered in lieu of qualifying should the session be cancelled as a result of more predicted storms in Texas.
Contingencies are being put in place by the FIA to ensure the United States Grand Prix goes ahead with minimal disruption amid fears over the intensity of storms bearing down on Texas.

On a day that saw a storm front bring torrential rain and lightning, forcing the cancellation of second free practice, it is feared worse could follow on Saturday as the full effect of Hurricane Patricia – which is currently battering the Mexican coast - makes its presence felt in Texas as it heads further north.

As it stands, forecasts are predicting the worst to come on Saturday afternoon, suggesting organisers could act early to ensure running does take place earlier than originally planned.

A firm decision on what to do is set to take place amongst stewards on Saturday morning, with options believed to include bringing FP3 forward to earlier than its current 10am starting time. Though it remains to be seen whether qualifying could also be brought forward, if FP3 takes place in acceptable conditions, it could well prove crucial to grid positions should qualifying be rained off as predicted.

Further options could include delaying qualifying until Sunday morning, though this is considered a risk since wet weather is still expected to continue into Sunday morning.

Should qualifying and FP3 not take place, options to determine the grid include taking times from the damp FP1 session or lining up in the order of the overall standings.

Despite the disrupted build up, there is currently a low chance of rain for when the race gets underway on Sunday, though it could remain wet.
