F1 Mexican Grand Prix: Verstappen: I would have been quickest without corner cut

Max Verstappen says his second fastest lap would have been good enough to top FP1 anyway after his best effort was achieved controversially.
Max Verstappen says he would have been quickest in first free practice for the Mexican Grand Prix regardless of the time gained by cutting a corner en route to the top spot at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The 17 year-old made more history by becoming the youngest driver to top an F1 timed session, though the feat appeared to have been achieved controversially when he cut the turn 11 left-hander having gotten out of shape around the Esses.

With the lap time standing nonetheless, Verstappen's accolade will remain in the history books, though the Dutchman points out the immediate lap was also faster than the previous benchmark anyway.

“My first lap I went off but then my second lap was only one tenth slower,” he said. “It still would have put me first, as I was three tenths clear.”

Despite the fast start, Verstappen's day would come to an abrupt halt in FP2 when he spun out of the final turn on his first revolution and impacted the wall. Despite the frustrating conclusion, he doesn't believe the loss of track time will hamper him.

“I was basically still warming up my tyres to prepare for a push lap and I went into the last turn pretty normal but suddenly I lost the rear a little bit.

“It's very hard on the tarmac to see where is still damp or where is dry, probably maybe I hit a damp spot and lost the rear a little bit and then I was a bit unlucky with the run off of course, because it wasn't a hard hit.”

“I've already learnt the track there and of course you want some more running that's for sure but we have FP3 for that.”
