Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner says Esteban Gutierrez's 'deep knowledge' of Ferrari was crucial in its decision to sign the Mexican for its maiden F1 season in 2016.

Gutierrez was officially confirmed as joining the historic American outfit as it prepares to embark on a new endeavour in F1 from 2016, the former Sauber driver paired with Romain Grosjean in what will be a relatively experienced line-up for the burgeoning effort.

Set to bring a wealthy portfolio of sponsors with him, including Mexican telecoms giant Telmex/Claro, team principal Guenther Steiner says it was Gutierrez's intimate knowledge of the Ferrari team from his current role as test and reserve driver that made him an easy choice for Haas.

"All along we said we were looking for experienced drivers, and we have that with Romain and Esteban," he said. "Romain has more starts, but Esteban has a deep knowledge of Ferrari and how they do things.

"He's learned from the best in his role as their third driver, which means he knows how they've developed their current cars. He's been a big part of that and he'll be a big part in the development of our cars at Haas F1 Team."

Haas comes into F1 having formed a partnership with Ferrari that will involve an engine supply and a share of technical insight.
