Valtteri Bottas has heaped praise on his Williams team for setting him up to clinch his second podium result of the season with an impressive third place at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Finnish driver produced a measured performance to jump from sixth on the grid and avoid the first lap squeeze and work his way past his team-mate Felipe Massa and the Red Bulls despite a heavy clash with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen midway through the race.

Bottas says he and the team got every call right to make the all-important decision to pit for fresh medium compound rubber under the safety car to line up a straightforward pass on Daniil Kvyat down the home straight at the restart.

"I have to say a big thanks to the team, we did a mega job today and raced like a race-winning team," Bottas said. "Overall it was a really good race. A lot happening but ended up well. The team did a great job today, especially with the strategy, so I am really pleased with that.

"I think it was really big call from the team they knew that I would come back after the stop before the safety car and that is why we opted for the mediums, it works better in lower temperatures. I saw Daniil Kvyat was sliding in the last corner so we managed to get really close and got through.

"From the start, the first corners were tricky and the safety car restart with Daniil Kvyat, and also the contact with Kimi. We had contact in Russia but this was unlucky that we got together again. I was trying to overtake him at turn five and there was no room."

Bottas' third place finish - his first rostrum since the Canadian Grand Prix in June - sees him move above Raikkonen in the F1 drivers' championship and into fourth, three points ahead of his fellow countryman.
