McLaren has caused a stir by pulling the wraps off a striking new F1 concept car, the MP4-X, which showcases a number of features and innovations being proposed for the future.

Allowing fans the chance to get a visual idea of how bold new technologies and advances could develop the sport in the coming years, the MP4-X project showcases a number of innovative features and incorporates 'emerging narratives'.

The aggressive but sleek design is notable for its use of a closed-cockpit and wheel-arches, while the technological showpieces include a full-electric hybrid motor to be powered by induction loops around a circuit and ground effect aero.

The second bold 'concept' to be revealed by an F1 team after Ferrari did something similar in Februrary, McLaren's John Allert days the design study represents what can be possible with a radical of the sport.

"With the futuristic McLaren MP4-X concept racecar, we wanted to peer into the future and imagine the art of the possible," said John Allert, Group Brand Director, McLaren Technology Group.

"We have combined a number of F1's key ingredients - speed, excitement and performance, with the sport's emerging narratives - such as enclosed cockpits to enhance driver safety, and hybrid power technologies."

"Formula 1 is the ultimate gladiatorial sport, and the future we envisage will be a high tech, high performance showcase that excites fans like no other sport."

"MP4-X is designed to use alternative power sources; the chassis changes shape to adapt to different aerodynamic demands; and it can communicate in the event of a failure or a problem."
