Sergio Perez says he expects to see Max Verstappen 'get better through the years', advising the youngster that he should maximise his opportunities even if he doesn't end up in the 'right team at the right time'.
Verstappen was the breakout star of the 2015 F1 season, the rookie making headlines as the youngest driver to start – and then score in – an F1 grand prix, before going on to produce a series of impressive performances, including two fourth place finishes.
Racing with Toro Rosso under what is believed to be a long-term Red Bull contract, Verstappen is nonetheless reportedly also being considered for a swoop by Mercedes and Ferrari.
For Perez, who enjoyed a shortlived spell with McLaren after two years at Sauber, he has urged Verstappen to maximise his chances should they come, but in the meantime he must focus on learning 'race-by-race'.
“I think Max is going to get better through the years, not only Max but the young drivers coming in,” the Force India driver said. “It depends on the opportunities. There are so many things happening in the career of the driver. What I recommend to them is to keep learning, keep improving race-by-race, year-by-year and maximise opportunities in your career.
“You don't know if you are going to be in the right team at the right moment, but no-one knows. Only a few people are lucky enough to get that so you need to maximise every opportunity you have and develop as a driver every year.”
