Lewis Hamilton has admitted his 'attention was elsewhere' at the end of the 2015 F1 world championship after clinching a third title and feels a lot of questions surround him ahead of the new campaign.
The British driver has enjoyed his first laps in the new Mercedes W07 challenger on the opening day of F1 pre-season testing at Circuit de Catalunya as he begins his on-track preparations for the defence of his F1 crown.
After sealing a third title at the United States Grand Prix last year with three rounds to spare, Hamilton says he loosened his stranglehold on the sport which duly enabled his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to claim a hat-trick of pole positions and race wins at the end of 2015.
Although the Brit says he isn't too concerned about those final three races having already secured the title, he has admitted he lost focus during those Grand Prixs and is looking to make amends at the start of 2016.
"I'm not really too fussed about what happened in the final few races of 2015 as it didn't affect my Championship,” Hamilton said. "Of course, I love winning and that's always the goal - but to be honest my attention was elsewhere at that point. It had been such a successful season and you can't win them all, so that was my feeling at the end of the year. If anything, it motivated me.”
Hamilton will be hoping he can instantly gel with the new W07 similarly to how he dominated in last year's Mercedes car, when he won three out of the first four races, and says even though he is still motivated to hunt a fourth F1 world title he is finding it harder to find the hunger.
"Motivation applies to different things in different ways for me. When it comes to racing, it's simple, as I'm just super competitive,” he explained. “But, when I'm training on my own for example, it can be tough to resist the temptation to let things slip.
“Every year you have to try to find new sources of inspiration to motivate yourself. I'm very lucky in that I have opportunities in life to find that inspiration in lots of different people, places and experiences. I'm just as pumped as ever for this season."
