Stoffel Vandoorne will make his Formula 1 World Championship debut this weekend after being called up to replace the injured Fernando Alonso at McLaren-Honda.

The highly-rated Belgian had been facing a season on the F1 sidelines as the reserve driver for the McLaren-Honda team, but the news that Alonso failed his pre-Bahrain medical in the wake of his monster shunt in Australia has paved the way for Vandoorne to make his first race appearance.

Vandoorne's promotion comes after he produced a record-breaking season en route to the 2015 GP2 Series title - clinching seven race wins and 15 podiums -, while he has signed up to compete in the Japanese Super Formula series.

He will become the first Belgian to race in F1 since Jerome d'Ambrosio..
