F1 Chinese GP: Hamilton, Rosberg differ on tyre selections for China

Pirelli has announced the choices made by each team and driver for the number of tyre sets and compounds for the Chinese Grand Prix.
Pirelli has announced the choices made by each team and driver for the number of tyre sets and compounds for the Chinese Grand Prix, with Nico Roberg and Lewis Hamilton splitting strategies.

Due to new tyre regulations, choices on compounds for long-haul races are made by Pirelli 14 weeks ahead of the race and opted to bring the medium, softs and super-softs for the third race of the season in China. The super-softs tyres must also be used in Q3 while the soft and medium compounds are mandatory to run at some point during the race.

At Mercedes, Rosberg has opted for a slightly more aggressive selection by sacrificing a set of medium tyres for an extra set of softs compared to Hamilton, while Ferrari pair Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen have gone for the same selections of three medium sets, four soft sets and six super-soft sets.

Williams, McLaren and Haas have been the most aggressive with its tyre strategy with all of their drivers picking a maximum allocation of seven sets of supers-softs.

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button have picked the same allocation while Felipe Massa and Romain Grosjean have been more offensive than their respective team-mates by opting for one more set of softs, and therefore only one set of mediums, compared to Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutierrez.

Elsewhere the majority of the field have adopted a balanced selection including Red Bull, Force India, Renault and Toro Rosso while Sauber and Manor have been the most conservative teams with tyre selection.
