F1 Chinese GP: We had chance to be on top - Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen: It was a good lap until the hairpin, at the end of the back straight, where I almost went off the circuit. Obviously it's was not ideal, but that's what it is...
Kimi Raikkonen says it is a “shame” he qualified third for the Chinese Grand Prix, as he feels he had the chance to put his Ferrari on pole position.

Raikkonen led the way after the first runs in Q3, but was unable to improve on his second go after a mistake at the hairpin and he was then ousted by both eventual pole sitter Nico Rosberg and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who finished up 0.055secs quicker.

“Yeah, I mean even on the previous run, on the same corner I went pretty deep - too deep - and in the last run I was quite a bit up on that lap and just ran wide at the hairpin and lost a lot of time,” Raikkonen explained, when asked if he could have got more out of it.

“It's a shame, as I think we had a chance to be on top today but that's how it goes and we try and make the best out of it tomorrow.”

Quizzed on what he expects from the race and the fact Rosberg will be able to run a much longer first stint after setting his best lap in Q2 on the soft tyre, Raikkonen replied: “I don't know. I'm not going to start guessing anything, but obviously I'm quite disappointed with what happened in qualifying.

“P3 is not a bad place to start from, it's the better side of the track, but you still have to make a normal, good start and go from there. Then let's see how it pans out, I'm sure the circuit won't be in the ideal conditions after the rain, and take it from there.

“Hopefully tomorrow it will be closer to what it was yesterday. We'll try to make the fastest race and see what it brings, if we can fight with the guys that are in front of us or not – let's see.”

With team-mate Sebastian Vettel only doing one run in Q3 and saving a set of the supersofts tyres, Raikkonen was also asked if he considered that strategy.

“We had different options about what to do, but we don't know what is better for tomorrow,” he continued.

“We decided to do a second run and it was a good lap until the hairpin, at the end of the back straight, where I almost went off the circuit. Obviously it's was not ideal, but that's what it is,” he concluded.

Such a shame Kimi couldn't hook up that penultimate corner properly on his final run... he looked to have lost a good 3-4 tenths of a second there, definitely cost him a front row start and could have clinched pole if carried through the last corner... Oh well... good to see Ferrari have race pace and although I don't really care, it'll be interesting to watch Ham come through the field.
