F1 Chinese GP: Right strategy nets Massa sixth

Williams driver Felipe Massa has credited the “right strategy” for his sixth place finish in the Chinese Grand Prix.

Massa lined-up tenth on the grid at the Shanghai International Circuit, but gained three places in the chaotic opening lap, before then managing his tyres and while he was unable to hold off Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen later on, he did enough to stay ahead of Lewis Hamilton and claim eight points, his third points finish of the season.

“It was a good race. I spent the whole race fighting with other cars and we got our strategy right,” said the Brazilian.

“I was worried about my strategy when the safety car came out, because I had no idea if it would work or not, but actually after the safety car the pace was really good straight away, so I managed to build a good gap to the other guys. We managed the tyres perfectly today. I am really, really happy with my performance, it was a very enjoyable race.”

Meanwhile, team-mate Valtteri Bottas also scored, finishing tenth in the sister car, but was left ruing the start and the final stint, when he struggled with the medium tyres and was then passed right at the end by both Toro Rossos.

“Yes, for me it was not so good. In the first couple of stints everything was working OK; even though at the start I was affected by the Ferrari crash and lost some ground. I don't know what happened in last stint, to be honest," Bottas remarked.

“With the medium compound tyres I just couldn't keep up the pace and it got worst and worst, costing me a few places. I had no overall grip on the car and we need to check everything to understand why.”

“Luck was not on my side today. I lost places when others crashed in front of me, so it was not my idea. So we try again in Russia...”
