Hamilton leaves Wolff open-mouthed by development

Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton's personal development as a driver since joining Mercedes has impressed him by the way he's reacted to recent adversities.
Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton's personal development as a driver since joining Mercedes in 2013 has left him stunned and has been seriously impressed by the way the defending F1 world champion has reacted to recent adversities.

The Mercedes chief has sympathised with his British driver who has endured a run of poor form caused by three consecutive first-lap incidents which have compromised his races in 2016, while in China he was forced to start from the back of the grid to due an engine fault during qualifying.

As a result, Hamilton currently trails team-mate Nico Rosberg by 36 points – the largest points deficit he has ever had in his three-and-a-bit years at Mercedes – but the three-time F1 champion has remained relatively calm and upbeat about the situation.

His positive reaction to the issues has left Wolff 'mind-blown' and he sees the development as a huge boost to his entire squad for the rest of the season.

“He's in a great place,” Wolff said. “The development I've seen with him as a personality is mind-blowing over the last three years he's been with the team. He's won two championships and found himself I think as a person.

“You can imagine how much pressure he has on with all the people who criticize and nevertheless he follows his instinct and he follows his way and that seems to be functioning and for the team it's great.

“We have two very competitive drivers who are in good spirits and who have integrated so well in the team and give energy to the team and push them forward. The Lewis I've seen coming straight back to the garage after such a situation and shaking everybody's hand and giving them a little clap of support leaves me with my mouth open.”

JohnMarston: Ill tell you whose development has impressed me, Vettel. He seems grown a long way since that 2010 season. Maybe with the exception of his reaction to Kyvatt in China.
Agreed, I wasn't too sure about Vettel for his first few years, his talent was obvious but maybe not his character but he's matured into a credible leader of F1, he's up there with Alonso now but considerably younger.
