Fernando Alonso believes the McLaren chassis is up with the top teams and is confident the “good times are coming”.
Alonso scored his first points of the season last weekend in Russia, bringing his Honda-powered MP4-31 home in sixth position, while team-mate Jenson Button also scored, finishing tenth.
It was McLaren's first double points finish since the Hungarian Grand Prix last summer and the Spaniard is clearly encouraged by the progress after a dismal 2015.
“We are up there with the top teams. Red Bull has a little bit of an advantage right now but after that there is a group of cars that can include McLaren,” said the two-time Formula 1 world champion.
“Everyone is working hard. We know the situation, we struggled last year and we had a difficult season, but we learned a lot of things and we are putting those things into the car now,” he added.
“Finally we are seeing the first progress that we can touch with our hands and I am enjoying my racing. We are definitely going in the right direction and I think good times are coming, quite soon.”
