Daniil Kvyat has spoken of his 'shock' at the decision by Red Bull Racing to replace him in the team with Max Verstappen, adding that he was offered little explanation for the move by management.

The Russian has been demoted to the sister Toro Rosso team for the remainder of the 2016 season from this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, with teenager Verstappen promoted to Red Bull Racing in his place.

Coming after he was roundly criticised for causing a first lap collision in the Russian Grand Prix, but just two races after he scored Red Bull's only podium of the season thus far in China, Kvyat admits he was given no prior indication that he would be replaced.

Describing the announcement as a 'shock', adding it came as he was watching Game of Thrones in Moscow to much amusement for the assembled media, Kvyat also reveals no clear explanation was offered either.

"There was no real explanation," he said. "If the bosses want something to happen, they just make it happen. I think the decision was a bit of a shock for myself but it is what it is at the moment.

During a press conference that lasted more than 40 minutes, Kvyat remained stoic in his reaction to the switch, but was also keen to focus on the positives of moving back to the team he started his F1 career with in 2014, adding he will treat this as a 'golden opportunity' to prove doubters wrong.

"I think I always gave my answers on the track and nothing will change. I will try to give the best answer on track in the races remaining. Toro Rosso is a team I like a lot, I felt the last few days have given me a warm welcome and I can already feel the atmosphere is very positive. The goals are clear for the team and myself. I will give my answers on track.

"There are a lot more positive moments than you could imagine and I take this as a golden opportunity. I really like the team, I like working with them and I believe we can do a really good job. Once the job is done there is more opportunities to come."
