Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari is working on ironing out its weakness witnessed in qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix to ensure it can attack in Monaco and hasn't ruled out a charge at the title yet.
The Ferrari driver struggled to produce the perfect lap in Spain, losing time in the tight and twisty final sector at Circuit de Catalunya, which put him behind both Mercedes and Red Bull cars.
Vettel says despite a strategy compromise to get ahead of Daniel Ricciardo his shot at a win was hit having started behind the Red Bulls once the Mercedes duo took each other out on the first lap.
The German driver has been on driving duties on the first day of the in-season test and focusing on qualifying runs in the hope of curing its issues to head into Monaco with a strong base to work from.
“We will look after ourselves, we were as competitive as expected with the exception of Saturday,” Vettel said. “Sunday we were in the ball park but struggled to get past. Once we were past, which were not that many times in the race, we showed that we were quicker in the race.
“It is a unique chance to have an opportunity to test right after a race at the same track in the same conditions. It is not a big secret that we struggled on Saturday so we tried some stuff this morning so we can build. It is not the only thing we are here for and we will try to do everything.
“I think it should be a strong race for us as we were very competitive last year and we have tried to improve the car in the areas we need for Monaco. It's better in terms of ride and kerbing.”
Vettel also feels he still has strong opportunities of battling for victories in Monaco and Canada and has refused to rule out a surge on the F1 championship despite the healthy advantage Nico Rosberg still holds in the title race, even after his retirement in Spain.
“We are not in the best position now, we are not the favourites going into Monaco, favourites after Mercedes,” he said. “We will try very hard and if there is a chance to win we try to take it. Our first step towards a potential championship is the race in Monaco, that's how we take it, after that it is Canada and step-by-step. We won't look too far ahead but we have chances there.”
