Nico Rosberg says it was important to get back in the car for testing as he looks to bounce back from his disastrous Spanish Grand Prix at the weekend.

The F1 championship leader was on driving duties on the opening day of the post-race Spanish test which acted as his first outing since his dramatic first-lap clash with team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg, who ended the day second overall having focused on braking and front suspension setup changes, felt it was an ideal opportunity to get back in the car as he looks to put last weekend's race behind him.

"It was a good day, a good day of testing. Learned a lot, made a lot of progress and that has been important, I'm pleased about that," Rosberg said. "We tested some mechanical stuff, something on the brakes, just some different things to try and make progress because we never test. We need to use days like this, they are very, very important.

"Good to be back in the car because it's my only test day of the whole year so it's really important to make the most of it and try and learn some stuff. So it has been good."

Looking ahead to the Monaco Grand Prix, Rosberg has set himself the goal of battling back immediately with a race victory after his winning streak was ended at Barcelona.

Rosberg says after Max Verstappen's victory for Red Bull his Mercedes squad will continue to combat the threat of the Dutchman's new team as well as Ferrari.

"I'm confident going there, yeah. I look forward to it and I would like to win the race," he said. "For sure we're keeping an eye on our competition - Ferrari and Red Bull - but we think we'll be quick so that should be okay. We looked to Monaco as well as down the line, but now the focus has got to be on Monaco."
