Renault third driver Esteban Ocon says it was important for him to get in some "decent" mileage on the opening day of the post-Spanish Grand Prix test.

The Mercedes prot?g?, who won back to back FIA Euro F3 and GP3 titles in 2014 and '15, has been 'loaned' to Renault this season, and while he did get to run in FP1 for the regie ahead of Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, a puncture and a battery issue limited the Frenchman to just 6 out-laps. He had no such problems on Tuesday, however, completing over 100 tours for the Enstone concern, his best time a 1 minute 26.530 seconds.

"It's good to finally be running with decent mileage, it's important for me and important for the team to get a lot of laps, and yeah no major issues, made up a lot of laps and a lot of testing, which is important for the future of the season," he reflected.

Quizzed on his programme for the day, he added: "We did a lot of aero testing, a lot of long runs, we can call the long runs 12 laps, we had quite a lot of sets on that, so yeah probably race run pace."

Ocon will now get to drive again on Wednesday, although he switches camps and will be at the wheel of the Mercedes usually piloted by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

"Looking forward to tomorrow of course, driving again a F1 car I can only be happy, it is probably going to be one of the only time I drive two days consecutively, I did that only in my first test in F1 but that was the old spec so it is going to be good to get closer to the limit and also driving for two amazing teams, I can't be more thankful for that," he stated.

"There is a lot to learn, definitely driving for the team that is leading the driver and manufacturer championship, it's going to be full of info for me, I will be mega eyes open and checking everything I can, it's a big opportunity definitely. Here [Renault] they have been winning titles and races not so long ago [too] we must not forget, both teams are great.

"I'm learning a lot and I'm enjoying the time."
