F1 Monaco GP: Perez picks up maiden Driver of the Day award in Monaco

Sergio Perez has bagged the F1 Driver of the Day award for his rostrum result in the Monaco Grand Prix, as voted for by the fans.

The new award for 2016 has been given to the Force India driver for the first time thanks to his savvy strategy in the wet-to-dry race at the Principality to take a surprise podium from seventh on the grid.

The Mexican driver capitalised on tricky weather conditions and a competitive Force India machine to keep up at the front runners before pitting later to intermediate rubber to leapfrog to third.

After fending off pressure from Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, Perez's move onto softs saw him close up to Ricciardo and Hamilton but he settled for P3 and with it his sixth podium in F1 and only Force India's fourth in its short history.

Perez becomes the fifth different winner after Romain Grosjean secured the first two in Australia and Bahrain for his surprisingly fast start to the season with new team Haas, with Daniil Kvyat picking up the honour in China, Kevin Magnussen in Russia and Max Verstappen in Spain.

The F1 Driver of the Day award is a new introduction for 2016 to increase engagement between the sport and its fans, with supporters asked to vote online for their driver of the day straight after each race.
