Hamilton surprised by points shift in title race

Lewis Hamilton says he is surprised by the size of the points swing after Monaco and will look to use the momentum in the middle third of the season.
Lewis Hamilton says he is surprised by the size of the points swing after winning the Monaco Grand Prix and seeing F1 championship leader Nico Rosberg slip to seventh to see the deficit effectively halved in one race.

The defending F1 champion is keen to take the momentum of a first win in nine races into the middle third of the season and feels having a mistake-free campaign will be key to closing the gap to Rosberg who saw him lead slashed from 43 points to 24.

“I did not expect the points to have shifted as much as they have,” Hamilton said. “Of course we have a long, long way to go and I think these past five races have just shown that anything is possible and more so than not on a negative way for me so I'm conscious of moving forward.

“There are still issues and mistakes are being made, so we really need to pull together as a team because where we are right now, we've got more pressure than we've ever had before because of the other teams applying that pressure.

“You are starting to see small buckles here and there so I think what is really important is that we pull together because we are the greatest team, we just need to refine a few areas and I think today hopefully will be a boost at least for my mechanics who have been nervous all year.”

With the switch of key technical personnel and mechanics between Mercedes drivers over the winter, Hamilton's revised crew looked under pressure after a series of mechanical issues which had hampered Hamilton over the opening seven races.

Hamilton has sympathised with his crew and hopes the victory in Monaco will act as a timely boost to their confidence heading to Canada where the British driver has strong form having won in Montreal in four occasions.

“It's not easy coming from one side of the garage to the world champion's car,” he said. “I would imagine that is the same when you are given Fernando as a driver or Sebastian, that's just how it is.

“I need to turn up in the car and deliver and because of the issues that we've had they have probably felt like we're not delivering but we have been delivering and I think today must be a great relief for them.”
