F1 Canadian GP: Ricciardo hopes Mercedes has to turn engine down for race

Daniel Ricciardo feels if Mercedes have to run a lower engine mode for race pace in Canada it can open up an 'awesome' three-team battle for victory.

The Red Bull driver has conceded despite its upgraded Renault engine it hasn't been able to bridge the deficit to Mercedes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after being forced to settle for fourth in qualifying, three-and-a-half tenths off pole-sitter Hamilton's lap time.

With conditions expected to be cooler, and possibly wet, Ricciardo is confident it could favour his team and hopes with Mercedes' recent reliability issues the engine-dependent Montreal track will not enable the German manufacturer to pull out a similar advantage from qualifying.

“Hopefully we can be there with Mercedes and Ferrari,” Ricciardo said. “Mercedes generally have a bit of a qualifying mode, so maybe if they have to turn the engine down a bit for tomorrow it will put us closer.

“I would love a fight between all three of us, all three teams, that would be awesome. As always they will still be the ones to beat. But we can be pretty close to them.

“Cooler conditions will help us. Friday we struggled a bit with the hotter track temperature. If it was hot again tomorrow we would make some changes to make us better, but we have been more competitive in the cooler conditions. So it will be close.”

If Nico can get ahead of Hamilton at the start you might get your wish Daniel, His car has a tendency to go into a lower power mode when Lewis has a bad start
