Lewis Hamilton says his victory in the Canadian Grand Prix "feels such a blessing", although he concedes his start was just "horrible" and that he was grateful neither he or team-mate, Nico Rosberg suffered damage after they touched into Turn 1.

Hamilton had another bad start, with Sebastian Vettel coming through from third to lead into the first corner, while he and Rosberg had another coming together, with the latter slipping down to ninth as a result.

With Ferrari and Vettel then opting for a two-stop strategy, however, and pitting early, Hamilton re-took the initiative, eventually beating the German by 5 seconds.

"I couldn't be better. What an amazing day," Hamilton said after his fifth victory in Montreal.

"Today I had another really bad start though, it was horrible. I am not really quite sure why. I think overheating my clutch.

"Sebastian and Nico got quite a good run and down in Turn 1, tyres are cold, big understeer, and I feel very grateful that me and Nico didn't damage anything on our cars. After that it was just trying to chase this guy [Vettel] down. He was so quick out there.

"But the car felt fantastic. We got the set-up just right with great work from the engineers and mechanics. Man I won my first grand prix here in 2007, so this feels such a blessing."

Hamilton now closes up on Rosberg in the Drivers' Championship, reducing the gap to 9 points heading to Baku next weekend.

Asked what the plan is for the rest of the year and in the wake of his second win in succession, the Briton replied: "We are just going to take it one race at a time. There is still work to do. We are going to continue to improve this car. There are a lot of races [left].

"I need to try and keep on the road if possible. It is a long, long way to go and these guys, Ferrari - as well as Red Bull - are getting faster and faster and I think collectively as a team we are going to keep our heads down and keep pushing.

"Honestly I am just overwhelmed today. I remember, 10, 9 years ago when I was here [and took my maiden win] and it feels just as great as back then.

"I want to say a big thank you to everyone that came out today and made the atmosphere the way it is. We come here every year and we have the best week, the city, they just put on such a great event and the ambiance, the atmosphere, is better than ever."
