Valtteri Bottas has thanked his team after taking third place in the Canadian Grand Prix, adding that while the result “didn't come easy”, the strategy and the choice of lap to stop on was just “perfect”.
Bottas ran sixth in the early stages of the race, making his sole trip to the pits for fresh rubber on lap 23 and while he re-joined just behind Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, he later passed the Aussie after he locked up at the final chicane. Bottas also later got the second Red Bull of Max Verstappen, when the Dutchman switched to a two-stopper, finishing 6.6secs ahead at the chequered flag.
“Everything was perfect,” said Bottas, after taking his second third place finish in as many years at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and his first podium since Mexico last year.
“I'm really pleased, as a team we were strong, a great strategy and the car felt really good today and I was on it. It's great to be up here and a big thank you to the team as everyone has done an amazing job.”
“It feels really good to be here again. It was always going to be one of the good tracks for us, but the result didn't come easy,” he stressed. “The strategy and the choice of lap to stop was perfect.
“[As I said] I really have to thanks Williams for this result but we need to keep getting these kind of results.
“Thank you Montreal [too], you've been very good to me.”
After beating the Red Bulls fair and square, Bottas also thinks this podium won't be a one-off.
“This result gives us confidence we can do good things. This is one of the good tracks [for us], but the team did a great job with the strategy. The car though was also quick today, from the start I could put pressure on Kimi [Raikkonen] and even the Red Bull.
"I think the next few races should be good. This really makes a lot of good to the team and it's a motivation boost for the next races.”
