F1 Austrian Grand Prix: Hamilton: I’m way off the pace…

Lewis Hamilton says he has a fast Mercedes underneath him, but he needs to improve his own performance to defeat Nico Rosberg in Austria.
Lewis Hamilton says the onus is on him to pick up his pace following free practice for the Austrian Grand Prix after trailing Nico Rosberg in both free practice sessions.

On a day hampered by rain, as well as adapting to the newly resurfaced Red Bull Ring, Hamilton suffered a spin early on in FP1 and failed to get the better of title rival Rosberg throughout the day.

One of the few venues on the calendar that Hamilton has not previously won at, the Briton admits he is taking his time to get up to speed, but while he was full of praise for his Mercedes W07, he was less enamoured with his own efforts.

“I'm way off. I'm not saying my peak, but I'm way off the pace. Nico was much, much quicker today, so I've got to find that tomorrow. It's not impossible to find that, but we will see.

“I was on pole last year and I usually eventually get there but right from the get go I just don't feel great on this track and I don't know why. It's just in me and I've just got to out there and find the time in myself. The car is fine.”

Coming into the weekend chasing a 24 point deficit to Rosberg, Hamilton is nonetheless hopeful he can take the fight to Rosberg by qualifying.

“It wasn't really a great lap and his [Rosberg] lap wasn't a true showing of his pace also. The first sector is quite easy, so I'm generally as fast, but the middle sector and final sector I'm pretty slow. I have to try and find my time tomorrow.”

When will he realise that jetting off around the world from time zone to time zone, will and does take the edge of off concentration, hence sooooooo many small, but at this level costly mistakes, like, or as most on this site appear to dislike him, he makes a of late boaring F1 watchable ( just ) imagine a grid of drivers like his team mate, oh so exciting.
