F1 Austrian Grand Prix: Hamilton throws support behind Osterreichring revival

Lewis Hamilton says talk that the Osterreichring could be revived is the 'best news' he has heard in a long time.
Lewis Hamilton says talk that Red Bull could revive the iconic 'Osterreichring' layout for next year's Austrian Grand Prix is the 'best news' he has heard in a long time.

The original Osterreichring featured on the F1 calendar between 1975 and 1987 and was notorious for its 6km, high-speed layout, but the circuit would ultimately fall out of favour during the 1980's turbo era as speeds increased at the risk of safety.

Revived in much shorter configuration as the A1-Ring in 1997 until 2004, the circuit made another return to the F1 schedule in 2014 after being bought and updated by Red Bull.

However, with changes to the regulations for 2017 raising concerns the circuit will become too short by modern-day F1 standards as lap times come down, Red Bull chairman Dietric Mateschitz has teased the company could invest in expanding the track in a similar layout to that of the Osterreichring.

Though the suggestion is merely at the planning stage, defending champion Hamilton says he is excited by the idea of reviving such an iconic circuit.

“That's the best news I've probably heard in Formula One for a long time,” he said. “They're going to take a track back to what it should be or what it was previously. The track is nice as it is now but I've not seen the old track but I can imagine going up into the mountains and into the woods it's going to be epic so I really hope they do that personally.

Nico Rosberg says he is also in support of a revival having watched footage of title-winning father Keke Rosberg race there in the past.

“I just watched the video from 1982, one of the closest finishes with my Dad finishing second and definitely it looks very exciting so yeah, if they do that, cool.”
