Nico Rosberg will start the Austrian Grand Prix from sixth position on the grid, despite taking a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change ahead of qualifying

The German set the second fastest time in Q3 but a gearbox change ahead of qualifying was always set to demote him five positions, leaving him a provisional seventh.

However, with Sebastian Vettel behind him also incurring a penalty for a gearbox change, the format of the how penalties are handed out means he is demoted first - dropping him from fourth to ninth -, followed by Rosberg. As Vettel cannot take his fourth position, the grid is 'closed up', thus lifting Rosberg back up a spot to sixth.

Indeed, the Austrian Grand Prix grid takes on a very different look to how it appeared on the timesheets, with three-place grid penalties also handed out to Jolyon Palmer, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr, leaving them provisionally 20th, 21st and 22nd.

However, they have also now moved up a spot at the expense of Daniil Kvyat, who will start from the pit lane with a new chassis and gearbox following his high-speed accident during qualifying.
