Max Verstappen has notched up Red Bull Racing's first podium finish around its own circuit after making a 'hard' one-stop strategy work in his favour before capitalising on the final lap drama ahead to finish second.

Making impressive gains from eighth on the grid, an aggressive first lap would see Verstappen get ahead of Daniel Ricciardo for sixth before steadily being played into contention on the super-soft tyres as the ultra-soft shod cars ahead came in.

Rising to third place following the pit-stop period, ahead of Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen, Verstappen at one point led briefly in the closing stages as both Mercedes' came in for fresher rubber, the Dutchman gamely defending hard as they re-approached to move back ahead.

Putting in a mammoth 55 lap stint on the soft rubber, though Verstappen would be caught by Raikkonen in the closing stages, he would hold firm in the Red Bull before climbing to second unexpectedly it the wake of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's collision ahead.

A second podium of the season - and Red Bull's first around the Red Bull Ring - a thrilled Verstappen was delighted with yet another standout performance.

"It was a great start and a good first lap," he said. "Straight away the pace was there in the car so I smoothed up to the front and once I cleared some guys I got into my own rhythm. I think everything was going well and I did a long stint on the soft tyre so the last ten laps made it very hard and I could see Kimi behind me, he was catching up a lot.

"To finish second after what happened on the last lap and to finish second as a Red Bull driver at the Red Bull Ring is a great feeling."
