RESULTS: Full Hungarian Grand Prix FP1 results from the Hungaroring

Lewis Hamilton has topped first free practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix as Mercedes exerted a sizeable early margin over Ferrari and Red Bull Racing at the Hungaroring.

Though overnight rain ensured a damp start to proceedings initially, Mercedes wasted no time in establishing their advantage once the surface was dry as Nico Rosberg pumped in a 1min 21.584s lap on his first super-soft run, before title rival Hamilton usurped him with a session-topping 1min 21.347s lap.

Putting the defending champion two tenths clear of Rosberg, who was this morning confirmed as having signed a new two-year deal with Mercedes, the grippy new tarmac around the resurfaced Hungaroring enabled both Mercedes' to lap well beneath last year's pole winning time of 1min 22.020s.

Also using the super-soft tyres, Ferrari found itself well adrift in third and fourth positions, Sebastian Vettel - who spun at Turn 12 - and Kimi Raikkonen 1.6s and 1.7s adrift of the identically-shod Mercedes and one 0.1 and 0.3secs than Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen as they persevered with the soft tyres.

Despite spins for both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button - at T14 and T11 respectively -, the McLaren-Honda drivers were an encouraging seventh and eighth quickest, ahead of Haas' Romain Grosjean and Force India's Sergio Perez.

Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon returned to the cockpit at Haas and Renault for more FP1 mileage, the Monegasque driver impressing with the 16th fastest time despite a spin at the Turn 6 chicane and out-pacing Ocon in 18th.
