F1 Hungarian GP: Mercedes undecided on whether to green light ‘Halo’

Toto Wolff says he is still deliberating on whether to vote in favour of the 'Halo' but says only safety will influence his final decision.
Toto Wolff says he is yet to decide whether he will vote in favour of or against the so-called 'Halo' cockpit protection device at this week's crunch Strategy Group meeting, but insists his Mercedes vote will be on safety factors only.

Ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, drivers were shown a presentation detailing the pros and cons of the divisive concept, which has received support from the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button, but staunch criticism from Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer.

Now teams will get to have their first definitive say on the device at a Strategy Group meeting in Geneva this week, with a vote on whether to push ahead with a potential 2017 introduction. A positive outcome for the Halo would smoothen the path towards its integration, though the FIA can still green light it on the grounds of safety even with a 'no' consensus.

With Red Bull's Christian Horner saying he is preparing to vote against it when asked at the British Grand Prix, Wolff says he is reserving his judgement for the time being but says will form a judgement on the safety implications alone.

“I think first of all, whatever can be done for the safety of the drivers needs to be done. Even if it looks disgusting… I don't think it looks Formula One, I don't think it makes the sport and the cars and the drivers appear spectacular, but all that doesn't count because safety comes first and we are going to have a discussion about all of the safety aspects of the Halo.

“Is it the safety tool that we need in order to protect the drivers more? My personal opinion is that we need to look at all the studies that have been done and discuss them with the various standpoints and then come to a decision that can be either, that is a good thing, or it's a good thing but it is not where it should be yet, or we don't like it for safety reasons. I haven't made up my mind because I want to hear the other opinions as well.”

Discussing the presentation itself, Wolff says it was 'convincing' but it hasn't covered all of his concerns.

“[It was] is a convincing presentation, but I haven't seem upside down on fire in the presentation.”
