F1 German Grand Prix: Hamilton: Why isn’t ‘Halo' being used in 2017?

Having declared his support for the 'Halo', Lewis Hamilton questions why it isn't being introduced in 2017.
Lewis Hamilton says he hopes no driver suffers a head injury this season or next in Formula 1 that could have been prevented with the use of the 'Halo' cockpit protector as he put his full support behind the device despite being initially critical.

Hamilton told the media at the start of the season that he would be prepared to remove the device if it was introduced in 2017, a stark differing of opinion with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg who has long been supportive.

However, though Hamilton was against the device as recently as the Russian Grand Prix, it became apparent his opinion had mellowed even before video expressing the pros and cons of such a device was shown to drivers in Hungary.

Since then, the Strategy Group has opted to defer its introduction until 2018, a move that Rosberg says he was disappointed by. It is a view shared by Hamilton too now though, the defending champion worried that the delay leaves drivers vulnerable in the meantime.

“I don't really know why it's not going to be there next year and that was a point that I made really, I just… Yeah… I basically had asked that if we are unfortunate enough to have an incident in the next year and a half and we knew we had a solution for it, that would have played a role in it, at the end of next year we are really going to be kicking ourselves.

“We won't but they will, because they've got a solution which does help and I think the great thing, the FIA have done a fantastic job in the last 20-odd years in always making increments and steps, and while it doesn't look great, we know that, but that 17 per cent we can't ignore.

“Over the time they will continue to develop that, hopefully in this next year and a half and hopefully it will be 30 per cent, 40 per cent by the end of 2017 but I just hope in that space of time when we know that we do have it and the teams can afford to put it on the cars, between now and next season, I hope in that period of time no one gets injured, including myself.”
