Red Bull Racing duo Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo have topped second free practice for the Belgian Grand Prix as FP1 leaders Mercedes opted for a conservative afternoon at Spa-Francorchamps.

With Mercedes the only team to use the super-soft rubber in the morning – allowing Rosberg to emerge seventh tenths clear of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in FP1 - it chose to focus on longer runs in the afternoon as its rivals got to grips with the 'red' tyres in soaring temperatures.

As such, Verstappen would give the large travelling Dutch contingent in the stands something to cheer with a committed 1min 48.085secs lap, two tenths up on team-mate Ricciardo in second as Red Bull suggested it could be a thorn for Mercedes this weekend.

Indeed, Rosberg was only sixth fastest this time having focused his efforts on the soft and medium rubber which could be crucial this weekend if the hot conditions continue.

Furthermore, with Hamilton already guaranteed to start towards the back of the field, Mercedes gave the Briton a very modest afternoon programme. Taking on his second new PU of the day – to increase his pool of components to the end of the year -, Hamilton was only 13th quickest as he focused on set-up and engine conservation.

Showing form akin to the speed it showed in Azerbaijan, Force India were Red Bull's closest challengers in third and fifth, Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez sandwiching Sebastian Vettel.

BACK TO FRONT: A history of F1 fight-backs!

Kimi Raikkonen was seventh fastest, ahead of Romain Grosjean – despite an off – and Jenson Button, the Briton making good gains in the afternoon after ending FP1 down in 18th.

Having ceded the headlines to new team-mate Esteban Ocon in FP1, Pascal Wehrlein was an impressive 11th quickest for Manor Racing, while the debuting Frenchman was only 21st this time.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing session for Williams, Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa down in 16th and 17th, behind the best of the Saubers, Marcus Ericsson putting the revised C35 15th.

For years now we've had Mercedes domination of nearly all practice sessions, if and when they want they can make their car go faster by the best part of a second a lap, now we have this new young driver storming up the ranks helping to slow down the dwindling f1 viewer figures, he then goes and tops the session in what is seen by most people as being a Home Race for him Its almost like the result of this session was already arranged
