Lewis Hamilton says after a trouble-free Friday free practice he will put his full faith in Mercedes to provide him with a reliable car for the Japanese Grand Prix having switched engine.

The defending F1 world champion is keen to put the pain of retiring from the lead in Sepang behind him and cut into the 23-point lead Nico Rosberg holds in the title race.

Hamilton enjoyed a solid day refining the balance and set-up of his Mercedes and ended it second fastest just 0.072s off pace-setter Rosberg.

“The engine so far is fresh, I mean it's not fresh, but I think it's done a couple of races,” Hamilton said. “I think Monza maybe and another one somewhere. The engine is good. Nico's has one race more than mine or something so it should be okay.”

“When you get in the car you have to have 100 per cent belief in your ability and the car and the guys and that you are safe. You don't ever put negativity in or 'what if', it's all about 'it will', so I believe that it will but I believed the last one would and it didn't, so…”
