Nico Rosberg has ended the opening day of action for the United States Grand Prix at the head of the timesheets after out-pacing title rival Lewis Hamilton at Circuit of the Americas.

After trailing Hamilton in FP1, Rosberg's super-soft run early on in FP2 would see him come out on top with a 1min 37.358s lap, three tenths faster than his fellow Mercedes driver down in third.

Between them, Daniel Ricciardo demonstrated Red Bull's potential pace around the Austin venue with an eye-catching lap that would take him to second fastest, two tenths adrift of Rosberg and a tenth up on Hamilton.

Sebastian Vettel emerged fourth fastest for Ferrari, albeit a substantial eight tenths adrift of the top spot, while Max Verstappen rounded out the top five in the second of the Red Bulls.

Confirming Nico Hulkenberg's strong pace in FP1, the German and Sergio Perez seventh and eighth quickest for Force India, ahead of ninth place Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, the Finn struggling with set-up issues to finish his day down the order.

Despite a spin late in the session, Carlos Sainz ended his day just outside the top ten in 11th, ahead of Kevin Magnussen, Felipe Nasr and Valtteri Bottas, the Williams team focusing on set-up throughout FP2.

Further back, Jolyon Palmer endured his second spin of the day en route to 14th, while Esteban Ocon survived his own off into the gravel to out-pace Manor team-mate Pascal Wehrlein.

The session was briefly stopped - scuppering several long run tests - to clear a piece of debris.
