Mexican Grand Prix - Free practice results (2)
Sebastian Vettel says he won't get too excited about Ferrari's potential ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix despite emerging as the surprise pace setter in second free practice around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
One of the few drivers to get the most from the tricky super-soft tyres, Vettel's lap time of 1min 19.794secs lap would prove a benchmark too high for either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg as he topped the timesheets.
The first time a Ferrari has been quickest in FP3 since Kimi Raikkonen in Spa, Vettel was impressed to be in the mix, but insists it is 'not the time to get excited'.
“The pace was already very good last year so it seems there might be something about Mexico City that suits Ferrari and hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow.
“It's difficult to say, it's Friday after all, so not the time to get excited. If we are in the same position tomorrow afternoon then we can be excited.”
BREAKING POINT: These F1 races really push drivers and cars to the limit
Indeed, Vettel feels Hamilton – who was only 0.004secs behind in second place – had a scruffy enough lap to assume he would be ahead with a cleaner run.
“I think Lewis' lap didn't look particularly good, so I think he has a little bit more in the pocket. Tomorrow we need to be realistic. If it's like this tomorrow we will take it tomorrow, but we have to look after ourselves. We had a very good day, not judging the result but just judging the feeling of overall pace, not just for one lap but all the laps we did.”
Even so, Vettel wasn't entirely happy with his afternoon after once again getting on the team radio to complain about traffic, at one stage calling Fernando Alonso an 'idiot'
“Maybe it was just me today, but I felt that I was actually in Mexico City and not on the track today because there was so much traffic,” he said.
“I guess everybody was fighting with the same problems of making the tyres last, especially with the super-softs. I don't know entirely because I had so much traffic I didn't have successive laps.”
