F1 Mexican GP: Alonso ‘forgives’ Vettel for ‘idiot’ remark

“He's living a very frustrating period, for himself and for Ferrari, so we have to forgive him..." - Fernando Alonso
Mexican Grand Prix - Free practice results (2)

Fernando Alonso says Sebastian Vettel is 'living a very frustrating period' at Ferrari, which he says might explain his outburst at his fellow champion over the team radio in free practice for the Mexican Grand Prix.

Vettel got bottled up behind Alonso around the twisty Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit during second free practice, prompting the Ferrari driver to express his frustration with the Spaniard by calling him an 'idiot'.

BREAKING POINT: These F1 races really push drivers and cars to the limit

With Vettel justifying his outbursts by remarking that he felt he was 'driving Mexico City because there was so much traffic', Alonso simply laughed off the insult by making a pointed remark referencing his own time at Ferrari.

“I heard what Vettel said on the radio but I don't make an issue out of it,” he said. “He's living a very frustrating period, for himself and for Ferrari, so we have to forgive him.”

A solid start to the Mexican Grand Prix for the Spaniard after setting the tenth fastest time in FP2 but he isn't expecting to make it into Q3 come qualifying.

“For now we are in P10 and P12, we know the Mercedes-powered cars gain a few tenths in qualifying as they have the “push” button. I'm with the old engine, I don't have the latest version on my car, so to get into Q3 would be a surprise. We'll try our best but it won't be easy to get into Q3.”
