RESULTS: Mexican Grand Prix - Qualifying results

Sebastian Vettel has denied qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix represented another missed opportunity for the Ferrari team as he struggled to capitalise on its practice pace when it mattered

The four-time world champion will start down in seventh for the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, a disappointing outcome having topped FP2 and given Ferrari's eye-catching pace in free practice relative to Mercedes and Red Bull coming into qualifying.

Indeed, even Vettel felt there SF16-T's pace is good enough for the front row but for the Ferrari's failure to get the most from the super-soft tyre in Q3 left it floundering at the crucial moment.

"The temperatures were up so it should have been better, but obviously we struggled on the super-soft compared to the soft compound already this morning and also this afternoon.

BREAKING POINT: These F1 races really push drivers and cars to the limit

"Clearly something didn't go our way, but we still have a good feeling about the car around this track. Hopefully we can show that tomorrow, but obviously for now we are very disappointed because I don't need to explain to you that it's a lot harder on a Sunday to start seventh compared to the front row. We will see and as we touched on earlier, we probably have an advantage on tyre strategy and then we will see what happens tomorrow.

Vettel - who will start on the soft tyres - doesn't believe the session was another example of Ferrari failing to take its opportunities, adding that he feels there are still good chances in the race.

"I think this weekend has been very positive up until qualifying. So I was really looking forward to it and, as I said, the car deserved to be on the first row in my point of view. I don't think that's optimistic, I think that's realistic, but as a fact that didn't turn out to be realistic because we only qualified sixth and seventh.

"Tomorrow is completely different - one lap is very different to doing many laps in the race and I think we tried it and it worked for both of us. That's positive and it should help us in terms of race pace and finding the right strategy, I hope."
